WoohooMommy's Summer Hygge Tips

Hygge. We're all obsessed with it for keeping our winters cozy, warm, and sane. But hygge in the summer? Bizarre!! ...Right?

Alas, not so. Summer is an overlooked but wonderful time to continue hygge practices, though in a slightly different way. Even when it's hot out, you can still feel all the inner warm snugglies even  while keeping cool in the shade with summer hygge. Here's how :

1. Towels and Throws
Whether you're going to the beach, the lake, the pool, or just the backyard, towels and throws are essential for summertime. Toss one over a chaise or on the ground, and get a little bit of feel-good hygge even in your bikini.

2. Cover-ups
Along the same line, I love a nice cover-up in the summer, something light and soft - - perfectly
summer hyggeligt.

3. Popsicles
In the wintertime, hygge usually means baking, and why not? It warms a cold house, filling it with glorious scents of baking bread or cookies, pies and tarts, and the food itself warms you from the inside out. The opposite is needed in the summer - - food that cools you from the inside, but the idea of making something tasty together which fosters bonding and happy memories, remains important year-round. So grab your kids and make some  popcicles. At my house, we simply fill plastic popsicle molds with juice, yogurt, or leftover smoothies.

4. Picnics, Eating Outside
The summertime answer to warm soups and hot dishes, salads and sandwiches shine when the weather gets warm. And what's better than eating out in the sun or the shade? Lay out one or two (or three) of your cozy throws under a tree and fill the picnic basket with whatever you'd normally eat for lunch - - pb&j's, sammies, salad, chips, fruit, and get outside! Don't forget to roll in the grass afterwards, but make sure to use some bug spray!

5. Bring the Outdoors In
Another staple of traditional hygge is to bring in the outdoors. In the winter, this may mean bowls of pinecones or wreaths, but in the summer it means flowers, flowers, flowers! Cut some stems from the rose bush and fill a vase for your kitchen. (Add some sugar to help them stay perky!)

6. Grilling Outdoors
Get back outside for dinner, because honestly who wants to stand around a hot oven or stove, which will only heat up your house even more, when the weather's nice? Wouldn't it feel so much better to stand around the deck with a cold drink in one hand and a burger-turner in the  other? Yes, yes it will.

7. Cozy Socks and Slippers
Formerly reserved only for winter, cozy socks are actually great for summer nights too! Now just pair up your socks and snuggly slipper boots with shorts and a tee instead of flannel pajama pants. You can wear them on the porch or inside

8. Outdoor Fire Pits
One of my favorite things about summer by far is the fire pit. You can just hang out with friends and share a bottle of wine, or you can roast marshmallows for a fun dessert with family.

9. Camping
Camping is simply the logical conclusion of the summer hygge theme. It combines adventures in the great outdoors and getting cozy with loved ones in the perfect hygge way. Pretty much every element from the list so far can be incorporated into camping. And don't worry if you're not someone who can live without showers and toilets - - try "glamping" or even just pitch a tent in your backyard, or heck even in the living room!

10. Float Trips
I'm from Missouri, which according to folk etymology means "canoe." Whether that's correct or not, we certainly love to go on float trips. If you aren't familiar with that term, it just entails a day or longer in which you canoe down a river with your supplies, which could include a cooler full of beer. There are frequent stops for swimming, playing, jumping from swings or branches in ideal places, resting, eating, listening to music and making  conversation. Trips longer than one day include camping and cooking on the river. It's an experience you'll never forget.
